The End of an Era

Friday nights promised a visit to your local Blockbuster and an escape into movie heaven.  However, as video killed the radio star, streaming killed the video store.

You may not realise it, but the last Blockbuster in the world has just closed its doors to renting videos and re-opened them as an AirBnB.  Located in Bend, Oregon, USA, the sole surviving location of the video rental chain has been transformed into a limited-time Airbnb as a way to thank its supporters for keeping the business alive, offering locals the opportunity to enjoy a '90s-themed sleepover between its shelves of videotapes.

This is a great example of keeping up with the times, of people being resourceful, of repurposing something that is no longer relevant to the times. Something that is very relevant today due to Covid and the changing retail market.

This news sparked a trip down memory lane for our team and in particular, our Director, Chris McLeod who was the consultant back in the early 2000's to move our last inner city Blockbuster to 458 Brunswick Street, its last resting place.

Chris recalls how he was door knocking the local area in Brunswick St central when he started chatting to the owner of the Blockbuster store, "The owner and I were having a great chat about how the local area had changed, and in particular how his business was booming. He went on to mention how he had outgrown his current establishment but was too busy to look for somewhere to move to."  Chris jumped on the opportunity and with his knowledge of the area, quickly introduced the owner to 458 Brunswick Street.

The Blockbuster has now been replaced by Hotel Indigo in the ever popular Fortitude Valley.

Door knocking and getting to know our local area is something that Chris has ingrained in our sales and leasing teams. "You can't give our clients great service unless we do the hard work," commented Chris. "In addition to the technology we apply to our everyday job, we encourage our team to get out and walk the streets as much as possible, to get to know our neighbours, our local businesses, as you never know what opportunities may arise."
